After Nagasaki became an open port to Europe
in 1571, Christianity and Western culture was
introduced. Japan prevented its spread and it
constructed an artificial island called, 'Deshima'. |

It introduces the birth, changes, trade goods,
and life in Deshima. The island serves as the
arena of international exchange between Japan
and the West from a standpoint of¡¸Trading¡¹and¡¸Culture¡¹.
It includes mini Deshima, reduced on a scale of
one to fifteen, two stone warehouses, a garden,
and Nagasaki Deshima Materials Center. |

It means 'A house of woods'. It opened in 1992
and is made of Dutch canals, old castles built
in traditional Dutch architecture, and green gardens.

| In 1550, a Portuguese ship first entered Hirado
Port, located in the north of Nagasaki. Hirado,
enjoying prosperity as a key point of exchange
with Europe, holds an exotic atmosphere between
Oriental and Western culture. |

It stands in an old site of private residence
of the Hirado governor during the trading with
Netherlands and Engliand in early Edo Period.
It exhibits some 300 remains which tells about
the history of Hirado and Mizhmura. |

It is a Dutch-style building built in the colonial
period of Netherlands. It was used as the official
residence of the governor-general of Netherlands
until 1942 and then became the President's official
residence after independence. It shows the Batavia
architecture in the period of Hamel. |

Merdeka means 'independence. The square was developed
with independence from Netherlands as its theme. |

It is the largest historical museum in Indonesia
located in the west of Merdeka Square. It bears
some marks of the Batavia Period before independence
of Indonesia. |

MONAS is an abbreviation of Monument Nasional.
It was built to remember the Declaration of Independence
of Indonesia on Aug. 17, 1945. |
| * Sunda Kelapa Port |
|
It is an important place in modern history of
Indonesia, along with near old Batavia street
in Jakarta. Some Dutch-style buildings, built
during the 17th~18th century, are seen all around
the street. |

It exhibits the favorite furnishings of governor-general
of Batavia, paintings, and old maps and shows
the history of the Dutch Ruling Period. |

It exhibits traditional Indonesian ships, vessels,
and navigation equipment. It bears the marks of
prosperous history as the center of Jakarta and
the Southeast Asia in the 17th~18th century of
the Dutch Ruling Period. |

It is a housing site where Hendrick Hamel lived,
located at Kortendijk Street in Gorinchem.
It is sad not to see the original birthplace of
Hamel because all buildings were removed in 1917,
but you can guess how he grew and lived here.

along the Lingehaven River in Gorinchem. |

Gorcums Museum exhibits a variety of art objects
that bears the history and culture of Gorinchem,
Hamel's home. An old city hall has been used as
a museum building. |

It is believed that Hamel frequently used the
port. |

On Nov. 6, 1650, he began his first voyage here
after his employment by Dutch East India Company.
He left Netherlands here. It is located in Noord-Hollandse
Waddeneliland.
